The Safety,
Health & Environmental ( SHE ) committee should frequently ask ‘ How do we maintain the commitment in the
committee, and find new ideas,
activities or programs to keep everyone’s interest ?’ The SHE committee should constantly improve
and evolve. It is also necessary to go
back to basics and it is critical to evaluate our performance periodically
using objective criteria.
To re-charge the
SHE committee, the following are some suggestions and questions to gauge the
overall performance of the committee :
- Does the management support the committee’s purpose and objectives?
- Does the committee represent both the management and workers from various job responsbilities and departments?
- The committee should meet every month.
- Attendance of the committee members should be consistent.
- The committee should identify incident trends throughout the Group.
- Investigations reports should be done for both accidents as well as incidents that did not result in injury or property damage, but potentially could.
- Does the incident reporting process includes input from all employees/ workers regarding preventive measures for incidents reported?
- Does the committee have any decision making authority?
- Does the committee influence SHE related training programs?
- Does the committee coordinate SHE inspections?
- How does the committee disseminate SHE issues and concerns to the workers?
- Ensure the inspection checklists and accident investigation forms are relevant, or do they need to be updated?
- Encourage to infuse safety messages in all other meetings and trainings.
- Try to provide a treat at the monthly SHE meetings to show appreciation for the committee members time and commitment.
These are only some points that can be useful to do a quick
assessment of the SHE committee. Group
SHE management requests all branches SHE committee to be committed and
continuously improve the meeting methodology to show a more matured
performance. The SHE committee plays an
important role in the SHE Management System, and every single member in the committee plays a vital role in
this.
