SPOT HAZARD & BE REWARDED ( SHBR ) PROGRAM - MANAGEMENT ROLE

BY: MAGENDRAN R.                                                                                          DATE: 1.3.2012
      GHSE MANAGER

It is recognised that Safety & Health management system requires sustained and multiple efforts that thrive on mutual trust and cooperation.  It is gratifying to note that our management group is supporting the Group SHE Department to implement safe and healthy working environment at their branches and departments.  Despite this, challenges still exist, especially with many unreported Near Miss incidents.  We must eradicate this low awareness on this which could lead to potential accidents.  The most encouraging aspect of Safety and Health is that prevention is better than cure.  We as the management group must take every possible initiative to act before a risk kills or maims the workers or employees.

Group SHE Department has introduced the ‘ Spot Hazard & Be Rewarded ‘ or SHBR program as a way to arrest this low awareness among our employees.  This program not only encourages reporting hazards and near misses, but awards incentives too to those who submit good findings.  We strongly feel this can in a way reduce or even eliminate near miss incidents and hazards at workplace.  While this SHBR program is for all level of our employees, the management will have to play a crucial role in the implementation and success of the program.  A change is required in the mindset of employees or workers who hesitate to report such incidents.  It is up to the management to create this change by leading the way and also by educating the employees.

The process of reporting and awarding incentives is not the end.  The management must accept every report as a problem that must be solved.  They must, with their selected team, review the reports and find ways to overcome, control, minimize or even eliminate the hazards and near miss incidents.  Analyse the findings, make good judgements and come out with a solid solution.

I call upon all of us to work together for a safer workplace and the well being of our employees.

PROJECT : DEEN DAYAL WEST FIELD DEVELOPMENT ( DDW1)              BRANCH : LUMUT

JOB SCOPE :  BLASTING & PAINTING AND THERMAL SPRAY APPLICATION ( TSA )

                     PROVISIONAL
CONTRACT AREA                       : 2,000m²

ACTUAL WORK DONE AREA        : 3,223.52m²

DURATION                                : 3.5 Months

TSA APPLICATION SPEED           : 10 ~ 15m²/hour per Applicator

WHAT IS A THERMAL SPRAY:

  •  Melted or softened particles of materials, typically starting from a solid form (wire powder) on to a substrate.
  • Thermal energy is supplied using flame or electricity to melt or soften the materials.

  • Gas/air jets accelerate the particles toward surfaces where they impact to produce dense and adherent coatings.

ADVANTAGES:

No curing or drying times                 ●  Coating and job are immediately
                                                                   ready for use.

●    Varied thicknesses can be applied     Crucial parts or areas can be masked

No size restrictions or limitations     ●   Excellent adhesion for paints

PROBLEM ENCOUNTERED:
  • Stringent ISO Standard.
  • Stringent QA/QC  Requirement.
  • Frequent Test Panel & Bend Test  @ 50m²  Prior to Application.

EFFORT TAKEN TO ENCOUNTER:
  • Used “Trichloromethane Chemical “ for degreasing of grease and oil from the substrates instead of wash-down.
  • Surface contamination rating were achieved & maintained at Dust Level 1.
  • Wire and Test Panel send randomly to SIRIM to conduct the purity Grade as per BS1475 (Results Achieved above 99.86%  @ Requirement is 99.50% and above).
  • 1 Test Panel for every 50m² of Production Area @ 4 Nos. of  Dolly attached to achieve average bonding more than 2,000psi.

MILESTONE IN TSA

ü  Project completed as per Client’s fast track schedule.

ü  Directly lead the entire process resolving all the issues arise before, during & after the work execution with minimum guidance from Kencana, L&T and EIL Client.

ü  Manage to create profile >90 ~ 110 microns with  G20/40 instead of using Client recommended mesh size G10/20.

ü  Manage to produce 2,200psi Bonding Strength on Test Panel which is greater than International Standard (1,500psi).

ü  Client(L&T) assigned 3 PhD Expertise(R&D)involved in TSA from India to monitor the quality and our compliance. All 3 experts are very satisfied with our performance.
