GHSE MANAGER
A Near Miss is an
unplanned event that did not result in injury, illness or damage, but had the
potential t do so. Another simple term for this is “close call”!
Reporting Near Misses
creates an opportunity for identifying and removing unsafe conditions and
unsafe work practices. So, why is it so difficult to get our employees to
report Near Misses? When we look at risk based approach to Near Miss, It
becomes a ‘zero cost learning tool’. This means we will learn more from the
Near Misses occurring around us. This also has immense opportunity for our
employees involvement, which is a basic requirement for a successful SHE
Program, by embodying principles of behaviour shift, responsibility sharing and
awareness.
Leopad Group SHE
Department, to enlighten the seriousness and importance of this Near Miss
reporting, organized a forum on 24th November 2012, at SHELL Sports
Club Port
Dickson. This Near Miss forum was made a reality with the support of RM Leopad
Klang Valley Branch stationed at SHELL Hijau Project. Participants were from
all branches of Leopad Group and was open for all levels, but made compulsory
for the management and Safety personnel. Guest speakers for this one day
programme were Mr. Zulkarnain and Mr. Chandran from SHELL Port
Dickson, Puan Ruzita and Mr. Andrew from
NIOSH, and Puan Azlina Ibrahim, ISO 14001 and ISO 9001 consultant. Group SHE
Department appreciates very much the participation of these Guest Speakers.
This forum was also made more meaningful with the presence of Leopad Group CEO,
Mr. DK Guru.
Group SHE Department
hopes this Near Miss forum has created an open culture whereby everyone shares
and contributes in responsible manner. Near Miss reporting provides an
inexpensive means of learning but has some equally beneficial results. GSHE
Department will be introducing a new form, specifically for this Near Miss
reporting soon.
